How to Open a GRIB2 File (4 Methods, 2026)

GRIB2 (.grib2, .grb2) is the standard format for weather and climate forecast data from sources like NOAA GFS and ECMWF. It's a compact binary format, so you can't just open it in a text editor. Here are four ways to actually read one — from zero-install to full scripting.

Method 0 — Open it in your browser (no install)

The fastest way, and the only one that needs nothing installed: open the file in GribBox's GRIB viewer.

1. Go to /grib/viewer.
2. Drag your .grib2 file onto the page (or click to choose it).
3. Browse the variables, preview the grid, and export to CSV, JSON or GeoJSON.

Your file is decoded locally in your browser with WebAssembly — it's never uploaded to a server, so it's safe even for unpublished or confidential data. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and even an iPad.

Method 1 — wgrib2 (command line)

wgrib2 is the classic NOAA tool for inspecting GRIB2:

wgrib2 myfile.grib2            # list the records
wgrib2 myfile.grib2 -csv out.csv

Method 2 — Python with cfgrib / xarray

If you're already in a Python workflow:

Tools like NASA's Panoply can open GRIB2, but they're Java desktop apps you have to download and keep updated, and they can't run on an iPad or a locked-down work laptop.
